Wyre Forest Tackle Racism

During October Half Term the Wyre Forest District Council, in conjunction with Worcestershire Football Association, held a football filled activity week as part of the ‘One Game, One Community weeks in action’.

During the week qualified coaches delivered free coaching sessions using “the beautiful game” as a tool to raise awareness of racism. The sessions were run by community sports coaches who were driven to make young people aware of the issue. Thanks to some excellent partnership work, the Wyre Forest Sports Development Team were able to give away brilliant prizes including Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS computer games, an i-pod as well as the traditional “lets kick racism out of football” t-shirts.

Specifically, Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th October saw activity taking place at St Georges Park in Kidderminster where 14 boys & girls took part in the football coaching with a healthy representation from the local Bangladeshi community.

Furthermore, Spennells Park in Kidderminster played host on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th October where 25 young people from various local estates were enjoying participating in the beautiful game.

Lucy Savage (Community Sports Coach – Wyre Forest Sports Development) said “This was a great week for young people to get outside, playing football in an organised and safe environment with the ultimate aim of raising awareness of racism within the game”

The Worcestershire Football Association would like to give special thanks to Lucy and her colleagues for their enthusiasm & professionalism in delivering the project, with thanks also going to Barnardos for donating prizes to the event.
