Eight teams from across Worcestershire took part in the league which was held at the King George 'V' Playing Fields on the 3G rubber crumb astroturf pitches.
Teams from Kidderminster, Bewdley, Worcester & Malvern participated in weekly fixtures against one another, competing for points whist learning about the small-sided version of the beautiful game.
The final evening saw the league split into two with the top 4 teams competing for the ‘Championship’ and the bottom four teams competing for the ‘Plate’. The eventual winners were University of Worcester 'A' team who demonstrated a great understanding of the game and executed various futsal strategies with great effect. The Plate was eventually won by the County All Stars from Newtown, Malvern.
Matt Jones Football Development Officer said 'The aim of the project was to raise awareness to the game of futsal whilst providing regular competitive match play for adults. The game is still relatively new to the County and indeed the Country - the best way to learn about it, is to play it!’.
Matt went on to say 'From a developmental point of view the league has also provided newly qualified futsal referees with the opportunity to develop their refereeing experience'.
'... and whilst futsal is predominately an indoor game played on a hard-court, in the early stages of developing the game you have to be flexible in playing futsal on alternative surfaces without loosing the very ethos of the sport. The artificial pitches at the King George 'V' facility have provided this and the referees managed the games effectively'.
Following their Championship title The University of Worcester 'A' Team progress to the National Finals of the FA Futsal Cup which will take place in July – On behalf of the County we wish you every success gentlemen!
