Small-sided football has surpassed 11-a-side to become the most commonly played form of the game in England. The FA recognised this and laid plans for its future development.
In 2002, 4.4 million adults played small-sided football, with over a million involved in league or cup five-a-side. The numbers have risen year on year since, especially with the growth of purpose built facilities.
The FA has continued to support the growth of the game by establishing specific governance processes, standards of provision, relationships with commercial providers.
In addition, the country has seen a steady growth in Futsal, a more disciplined version of small-sided football with two match officials, a heavier ball and stricter laws. Schools, in particular, are being encouraged to participate in Futsal so players learn discipline at an early stage.
